A record modern day field of 128, including numerous new members, lined up for the Steigen 5 km sealed handicap which was the opening event of the 2017 season. With favourable conditions, the large field set off at a furious pace along the Barwon River paths. New member, Matt Gunther, was able to hold off reigning club champion, Ron Thomas, in the run to the finish Zoe Adams was the first female by almost 80 metres from Sara Coulter. When the secret handicaps were applied, it was Robert Blue who recorded his first club victory. Blue has been training hard and competing in the You Yangs Park Run. Life member, Ken Walker, was applauded for reaching his 600 run milestone, being only the fifth runner to do so.
