COVID-19 (Coronavirus) UPDATE

Geelong Half Marathon and 7 km Run

After careful consideration of the coronavirus situation, we must postpone the Geelong Half Marathon and 7 km Run.

But we are pleased to announce that, rather than cancelling the event, we are moving it to Sunday 13th September 2020.

This is of course subject to both us getting approval from authorities and mass gatherings no longer being of concern by then.

Entries are open for the new date of 13th September. All those who entered up to 18th April have received an email detailing the options if this date doesn’t suit.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday 13th September. Keep those legs ticking over and take this time to enjoy running around our beautiful surrounds for the pure joy of running!

To our Members

On behalf of the Committee, I send this very important message to you regarding the impact that the COVID-19 virus is having on our club’s operations.

COVID-19 has substantially altered the global sports landscape and will have material impact on the mass participation industry in the immediate term. We want to reassure you that the health and well-being of our club community is our primary concern. To this end, we are doing our part to communicate effectively and follow public health agencies and governmental authorities’ recommendations.

We are already seeing substantial and widespread event postponements. Our own Geelong Half Marathon has been postponed until 13th September 2020.  The calendar season is under threat, though with current restrictions  by the authorities, we hope we can continue with appropriate safeguards and common sense in place.

On the basis that our season will continue, the Geelong Cross Country Club has outlined a series of pragmatic and practical actions designed to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19 or any other infectious agent to members and our communities. These steps will help members achieve their goals while allowing the club to conduct their events in a safe and encouraging environment.

Self-care and Risk Minimization

Members, family and friends who are sick or have been potentially exposed to COVID-19 must not compete or attend events, as this puts others at risk. As a community, we each have a personal responsibility to protect each other by complying with this rule.

We ask that all members, family and friends follow the World Health Organization (WHO) guidelines for basic protective measures against the new coronavirus:

  • Stay home if you feel unwell. If you have a fever, cough or difficulty breathing, seek medical attention and call in advance. Follow the directions of your local health authority.
  • Regularly clean your hands with an alcohol-based hand rub or wash your hands with soap and water, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Practice good respiratory hygiene. Cover your mouth and nose with your bent elbow or a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Then dispose of used tissues immediately and appropriately in a bin.

For those who are sick, feel unwell, or have been potentially exposed to the COVID-19 virus in advance of a race that will take place, do not come to the run; instead seek medical care.

Safe Event Experience
In order to provide the safest experience for our members, families and friends, we are instituting the following at our races, effective immediately.

Reinforcing Social Distancing in all elements of the event

  • We encourage you to join and/or enter races on-line.  This is easily done so that no personal contact is necessary to do this.
  • Members will be encouraged to immediately exit the registration area, once they have completed the process. In other words, do not congregate in groups in the clubrooms, at least move outside so that you are not impinging on others’ space.
  • Member density during the registration process will be decreased by increasing individual registration space, staging, corrals, etc.
  • No-handshake or other personal contact behavior will be encouraged for the duration of the event.
  • Pre-race briefings will be conducted as quickly as possible in the open.

Hygiene First

  • Members and volunteers who have to interact with participants pre-race, during the race and post-race will be provided with gloves.
  • Suitable hand sanitiser will be provided at all events, including at the registration and presentation areas as a minimum.
  • No-touch waste disposal receptacles will be provided.
  • Frequently touched surfaces at race venue locations such as registration counter, tables and other common surfaces will be cleaned regularly.
  • Use of your own drink container (both for race and presentations) will be strictly enforced.
  • When possible, on-course fluid supplies will be single use/single serving closed packaging.
  • Presentation time will be as short as possible.
  • No handshake/contact during presentations.

This is a highly dynamic situation and we will continue to adapt and adjust as appropriate. We appreciate your patience in the coming days and weeks.  The club’s Race Committee is meeting next week to develop contingency plans should the season start and beyond be interrupted. We will continue to issue updates as necessary, so please stay tuned.
We recognize that this is a challenging time, but our club community will endure. As mentioned earlier, our goal is to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for you.
As further updates are available, they will be posted to all members via email, on the club’s website  www.gccc.asn.au and in our  social media pages such as Facebook.
Thank you for your continued support, and we wish you the best in health and wellness.
