Newgrove Benchtops Eliminator

Newgrove Benchtops Eliminator winner Jono Davis

A field of seventy-one assembled for the time honoured Newgrove Benchtops Eliminator at the South Barwon Reserve yesterday with a strong westerly sweeping across the exposed parts of the course. The Eliminator was first run in 1994, and unlike the early days, all entrants now have to complete both the 4 km and 3 km events with the best performed twenty qualifying for the 2 km final. It was Jonathon Davis, who returned to the club this season after many years’ absence, who was able to win the final by 30 metres from a gallant Grant Baensch with James Foran leading a bunch of five others over the line in third place. Davis attributed his win to the speed work he does at Geelong Masters every Wednesday night. After the race, the runners enjoyed a barbeque followed by the AGM.
