The forecast rain stayed away as 97 starters gathered for the East Geelong Discount Drug Store 8 km handicap at Inverleigh. A truly testing cross country course with quite a few puddles seemed certain to favour the backmarkers. However it was consistent placegetter and middlemarker, Sean Thompson, who was able to withstand the efforts of Kevin McNulty and Ron Thomas to win by 70 metres. Thompson proved he had suffered no ill effects from running the Otway Marathon the previous Sunday. Newcomer Jarron Cole and accomplished triathlete Kate Bramley were the fastest of their gender by huge margins. Handicapper and race sponsor, Phil Shay, was acknowledged for attaining his 300 run milestone.
